This solution is intended for workpieces that are difficult or impossible to bring into the booth through the doors because of their size, weight or shape, including steel structures, trusses, beams, masts, tanks and vessels, trailer frames and platforms, bodies and superstructures of special-purpose vehicles, as well as construction and agricultural machinery.
How the retractable roof works
The movable roof section travels along guide rails running the length of the booth. In the open position, it creates an aperture above the working area, allowing the workpiece to be lowered inside by an overhead crane or a mobile crane. This loading method eliminates the need for a clear manoeuvring zone in front of the doors, as well as trolleys and rail tracks, while making more efficient use of the available paint shop floor area.
In the closed position, the roof section is sealed around its perimeter. The booth then operates in spraying and drying modes with controlled temperature, filtered air and positive pressure in the working area.
Air handling and working conditions
Heated and filtered air is delivered into the working area through the ceiling filtration system. The airflow passes through the working area, collecting overspray particles and vapours. The contaminated air then passes through the filter wall at the end of the booth and is removed by the exhaust fan units.
During operation, the booth maintains a positive pressure of 20–80 Pa, which helps isolate the working area from the surrounding environment. This reduces the risk of workshop dust settling on freshly painted surfaces and helps contain overspray within the booth. The pressure is regulated by variable frequency drives and monitored visually using a draught gauge on the control panel.
Operating modes
The recirculation dampers are closed while the supply and exhaust dampers are open, allowing air to pass through the booth and be continuously replaced.
The working area is ventilated after paint application to remove solvent vapours. The cycle lasts for 5 minutes, while the temperature and air exchange remain at the spraying-mode level.
The supply and exhaust dampers are partially closed while the recirculation damper opens. Heated air circulates inside the working area, reducing the energy required to maintain the set temperature. The countdown timer starts only after the set temperature has been reached.
The supply and exhaust dampers open while recirculation is closed. The workpiece and the working area are cooled, after which the booth switches to standby mode.
Design
- Cabin — a steel frame structure clad with sandwich panels with a non-combustible mineral wool core. The cabin is installed on a level concrete floor and requires no special foundation.
- Retractable roof — a movable roof section with guide rails, a travel drive and perimeter sealing.
- Thermal ventilation unit — comprising an air intake module, an exhaust module and an indirect-fired ETO series heat exchanger. The supply, exhaust and recirculation dampers are actuated by pneumatic cylinders, with their positions monitored by the control system.
- Filtration system — comprising a pre-filter and a ceiling fine filter on the supply side, as well as fibreglass and cardboard labyrinth filters in the exhaust system filter wall.
- Lighting — sealed luminaires with LED lamps, including ceiling, wall-mounted (flush-mounted) and corner units. The ceiling luminaires form part of the cabin’s load-bearing structure and are installed at a 45° angle.
- Control panel — featuring a temperature controller, drying cycle timer, hour meter, fan and heater status indication, and positive-pressure adjustment via variable frequency drives.
Safety
- The booth is manufactured from non-combustible materials.
- An automatic interlock prevents compressed air from being supplied to the spray equipment if the ventilation system stops operating.
- Each thermal ventilation unit is fitted with two independent emergency temperature sensors: the first cuts power to the heat exchanger at 90 °C, while the second completely de-energises the equipment at 115 °C.
- The booth will not start unless the required operating pressure is available in the pneumatic system — at least 4 bar.
- The booth can additionally be equipped with a system for the automatic detection and removal of explosive concentrations of paint vapours.
- The equipment complies with European safety standards and national occupational health and safety regulations.
Built to order
RKFS series booths are individually manufactured to order. The dimensions of the working area, the size and direction of travel of the retractable roof, door positions, heating type and connection layout are defined according to the customer’s technical specification.
The service life before the first major overhaul is 5 years, while the design service life is 10 years. The warranty period is 12 months from the handover of the equipment ready for commissioning, but no more than 15 months from the date of dispatch.
